Anchorage Forklift Parts - Anchorage is a unified home rule municipality situated in the south central area of Alaska. Officially, it is called the Municipality of Anchorage and it is the northernmost major city in the USA. During the year 2010, there were 291,826 residents. When combining Anchorage with its neighboring community of Matanuska-Susitna Borough, there were roughly 374,550 inhabitants within this Metropolitan Statistical Area. Over 40 percent of the total population of the state of Alaska lives within Anchorage, making it the biggest city in the state. Only the city of New York has a higher percentage of inhabitants who reside in the state's biggest city among the 50 states in America.

In the 19th century, Russian presence was well established within south central Alaska. William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State brokered a deal during the year 1967 to purchase Alaska from debt-ridden Imperial Russia for $7.2 million, which worked out to around 2 cents per acre. Political rivals lampooned the idea and called it "Seward's Folly", "Walrussia" and Seward's Icebox". Gold was discovered in the year 1888 along the Turnagain Arm.

The city grew immensely during 1914, with the construction of a railroad port, for the Alaska Engineering Commission. The Alaska Railroad as it was known continued to be built until it was finished in 1923. A tent city emerged at the area nearby the mouth of Ship Creek where the railroad headquarters were situated.

Within the city of Anchorage, the largest economic sectors include transportation, tourism, municipal, federal and state government, resource extraction, military, some corporate head offices and several regional headquarters for multinational corporations. Anchorage's surrounding natural resources and geographic location account for a huge portion of the local economy.

Traditionally, the city of Anchorage has enjoyed steady growth, however, not necessarily as fast as many cities in the lower 48 states. The city of Anchorage does not experience as much disaster during economic downturns, with the exception of a real estate related crash in the mid to late 1980s.

The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport or likewise known as TSAIA is the third busiest cargo airport, surpassed by the airports in Memphis and Hong Kong. This abundance in traffic is linked to the location of the city along the "great circle," referring to routes between Asia and between the lower 48 states. Furthermore, the airport has a huge supply of jet fuel from the Alaskan refineries situated within the North Pole and Kenai. There is pipeline and rail service to transport the jet fuel to the Port of Anchorage.

The resource sector is the most visible business within Anchorage City. The city also supports several high rise buildings that are owned by the large multi-nationals such as BP and ConocoPhillips. Most offices and administration are located in the city of Anchorage. Field operations are centered on the South Slope of Anchorage around the Alaska North Slope and around the Cook Inlet.

The tallest building in the state of Alaska is the head office building of ConocoPhillips Alaska, a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips. It is situated within the downtown core of the city. Other businesses like for instance CH2M HILL and Arctic Slope Regional Corporation provide oilfield support services and are also headquartered outside of Anchorage but maintain a substantial presence in the city.
